History & Vision
When the first REM residence opened in 1967, community living options for people with developmental disabilities were practically non-existent. Since then, REM has been a driving force in the creation of community-based programs and has developed a coordinated network of services and supports throughout the country. Our experience provides us with the resources to continue in a leadership role as new options are made available to people who have challenging needs.
Opening Doors in Ohio
As a pioneer in the human services industry, REM quickly grew from its roots in Minnesota to a multi-state provider offering a range of services and supports. Building on success in Minnesota, REM opened its first home in Ohio in 1987. In the 25 years since, REM Ohio has established itself as a trusted provider for families, community partners and funding sources, and helped hundreds of individuals to live full lives in the community.
REM Ohio continues to respond to the complex needs of the communities we share by seeking new and innovative approaches to service delivery. Today we support more than 600 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as adults with complicated employment barriers, in 39 counties.
Together We Are Better
In 2003, REM partnered with The MENTOR Network, a national network of local human service providers. With more than 60 years of combined service experience, The MENTOR Network and REM joined to offer an even greater array of options for people with disabilities. As we continue to grow, our commitment to the people we serve remains our top priority. Ours is a network of shared values and resources; a nationwide team of professionals determined to help every individual thrive in a community setting through innovative, flexible programs. Together, our organizations have created a laboratory of innovation, delivering some of the most responsive and creative human services in the country.
