Vocational Rehabilitation Services

REM Ohio Inc serves a wide range of eligible persons.  However, our primary expertise lies with those who have intellectual or other developmental disabilities.  In addition, we are able to serve dislocated workers, criminal history offenders, veterans in need of services, and individuals with visual or hearing impairments.  

Our staff has experience and education in serving clientele with offense criminal histories, challenges with low income and resources, individuals with visual and hearing impairments, clientele who are severely physically or mentally disabled (including chronic mental illness) and veterans in need of our services.  We also serve youth and transitioning populations regardless of their socioeconomic or situational background.

Community Based Assessment (CBA)

Community Based Assessment (CBA) is an assessment of Consumer’s unique strengths, resources, priorities, concerns, abilities and capabilities or is intended to determine if a Consumer is capable of performing the essential functions of a specific job.  The assessment must take place at competitive job in an integrated setting in the community.   

Assessment of Consumers’ ability to perform specific job in the community. Assessment will be provided on-site and will include an assessment of the Consumers basic work skills, their ability to learn new tasks, work stamina, social skills and their ability to work competitively.

Career Exploration (CE)

Career Exploration includes services such as job shadowing, informational interviews, and reviews of local labor market information to help Consumers explore the potential for identified employment goals.  The goal of the service is to assist the Consumer and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Staff to narrow several possible employment options to one, which will be listed on the Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).

 

This service provides hands-on community based career exploration and informational interview opportunities. Specific vocations are researched, observed and experienced. Opportunities to gather information from chosen professions and the individuals who actually work or manage said careers will assist in the development of clear vocational objectives.

Travel Training (TT)

Travel Training consists of assessing a Consumer’s ability to travel independently and teaching Consumers to utilize public transportation.  Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP) will work with Consumer to teach them the following tasks: how to read and understand the public transportation schedule; know who to contact and how to schedule a ride; to map out their routes to and from the job site, and to understand the rules and policies that govern the public transportation system.  Training may also include helping the Consumer fill out the application and any required documentation.   

This service provides assistance and training on the transportation options available to the Consumer. One-on-one training is provided to develop transportation skills, assess the abilities of the Consumer on public transportation, and support them in the learning process.

Work Adjustment (WA)

Work Adjustment is a training program in either a community or facility based setting to assist the Consumer in acquiring or improving work skills, work behaviors, work tolerance, inter-personal skills, and work ethics.  Staff will be present as needed, to provide instruction, evaluate changes in behaviors, abilities, and attitudes.   

This transitional, time-limited service assist the Individual in becoming adjusted to the demands of the workplace as well as assist the Consumer build the necessary skills and abilities to obtain permanent competitive employment in their vocational area of interest. 

Summer Youth (SY)

Summer Youth Programs are intended to promote a student’s transition from school to post-secondary education, vocational training, or integrated employment.  Services should include an evaluation of the Consumers vocational needs, instruction on vocational topics such as interviewing skills, work behaviors; basic job readiness skills, and independent living skills; as well as integrated community based work experiences.  Staff will work with students to learn job tasks and implement skills learned through instruction. 

The Summer Youth Experience is intended to promote a students transition from a school setting to a vocational setting. 

Job Coaching (JC)

Job Coaching consists of one-on-one instruction to help Consumers learn job task and to adjust to the work environment.  JC will work with Consumer to learn job tasks, develop natural peer and environmental supports, assist Consumer in adjusting to the work site, increase work tolerances, provide encouragement and support, serve as a liaison between the Employer and Consumer, and assist the Consumer in requesting reasonable accommodations when necessary.  Coaching may occur on or off site. 

Retention (R)

Retention includes periodic contacts between the Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP)  staff, Consumer, and Employer after the JC has exited to ensure that the job match remains successful. 

Job-seeking Skills Training (JSST)

Job-seeking Skills Training involves preparing a Consumer to apply, interview, and secure a job.  Service may be individualized or follow a standardized curriculum.  Job Developer (JD) will work with Consumer to develop resumes and cover letters, teach Consumer interviewing skills, assist Consumer in developing strategies to discuss potentially challenging issues such as legal history, need for accommodations, etc., conduct mock interviews and feedback, assist Consumer in developing a “cold call” script, assist Consumer in filling out an application template, and provide recommendations on dress, grooming, and inter-personal skills.   

Instruction in filling out applications, job interviewing, resume development. 

Job Development

Job Development includes making contacts with Employers and identifying potential job leads to help Consumers find a job.  Job Developer (JD) and Consumer will have weekly contact during the service to share job leads and provide updates. Job Seeking Skills Training (JSST) activities such as resume development and interview skills may be incorporated into the service or purchased separately.   

Specific tasks may include, but are not limited to: assisting in completing applications, sending resumes and cover letters, accompanying Consumer or providing transportation to interviews, reinforcement of interviewing skills, follow up with Employers, educating Employers on hiring incentives, and negotiating hiring.

Supportive Vocational Services (SVS)

Services may include such tasks as: assisting the Consumer obtaining employment verification documents i.e. birth certificate, Social Security card, etc.; assistance in purchasing appropriate work clothing; assistance in purchasing gas cards and/or transportation vouchers; assistance arranging childcare and housing; assistance getting medication; and assisting Consumer access other community resources. 

 

One-on-one assistance provided to meet a variety of needs in order to become successfully employed. Examples are shopping for interview clothes and-or work clothes, obtaining necessary identification, and scheduling appointments with other agencies, Job and Family Services, counseling centers, the coordination of Interpreting Services, GED Tutoring- Individualized instruction to help Consumer in a specified area(s) of academic need, Drivers Permit Tutoring- Individualized instruction on Traffic laws and street signs using the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws.  

Special accommodations will be utilized as necessary. Instruction in filling out applications, job interviewing, resume development, under- standing Employer expectations, basic work ethics, safety issues, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, learning to access community resources transportation, day care, personal care, money management, shopping, and other activities that would enhance the Consumers employability.

Benefits Analysis (BA)

Benefits Specialist will work with the Consumer to help them understand the advantages to returning to work and how it will impact their benefits.

 

Individualized support to assist Consumers in resolving issues related to their benefits. Services may include development of Pass Plan, Consultation with Consumer and representatives of the benefit programs that the Consumer is receiving benefits from i.e. SSDI, SSI, TANF, Medicare, and Medicaid.  

Assisting Consumers in reporting their benefits regularly to agencies, resolving wage garnishment issues, assisting Consumer in getting benefits reinstated, and resolving overpayments.

Transportation (T)

Community Rehabilitation Program (CRP)  may assist Consumer with transportation to and from work and to other vocationally related appointments as determined by the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Staff.   

REM Ohio has a fleet of vehicles, including wheel chair accessible vehicles, which will be used in conjunction with other local services providers to provide transportation services to Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) eligible participants.

Computer Knowledge and Keyboard Assessment

Assessment of keyboarding skills and computer ability. Keyboard assessment includes individual hand and finger assessment as well as individual key and row ability.

The computer assessment is based on Microsoft Office Suite of programs including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Internet Explorer. The Consumer is assessed on his-her ability to find and do commands when given verbal directions.

Computer Assessment - Tutoring - Test Preparation

This service provides each Consumer with a one-on-one computer assessment - tutoring - test preparation while matching the individuals needs and learning styles. Types of assessments and-or tutoring can include but are not limited to intro computer operations, intro key boarding skills assessment, basic - functional math, reading and college curriculums.  

Previous tutoring experiences have included: Computer – Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Commercial Drivers License (CDL), reading, college composition, math, and alternative-learning environments to college level statistics, computer technologies and economics.

Mobile and/or On-site Computer Skills

This service can be provided at a location convenient to the Consumer, i.e. home, worksite, local library or IS. It provides each Consumer with one-on-one computer training - test preparation while matching the individuals needs and learning styles.

 

Types of training and-or tutoring can include but are not limited to Intro to Computer Operations, intro key boarding skills assessment, basic - functional math, reading and college curriculums.

 

Previous tutoring experiences have included: Computer - Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Commercial Drivers License (CDL), reading, college composition, math, and alternative-learning environments to college level statistics, computer technologies and economics.  

Referral sources may also request assessments and training for special computer software and hardware programs and systems.

Types of training and-or tutoring can include but are not limited to Intro to Computer Operations, intro key boarding skills assessment, basic - functional math, reading and college curriculums.
